MEDICARE

Medicare is Federal health insurance for anyone age 65 and older, and some people under 65 with certain disabilities or conditions.  It differs from Medicaid which is a joint Federal and State program that provides health coverage for some people with limited income and resources.  It is possible that a low income senior or someone with disabilities may be eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.  This is called being "dually eligible."

BRIEF OVERVIEW:*

1

MEDICARE
PARTS A, B, & D

  • PART A: (Hospital Insurance) Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.

  • PART B:  (Medical Insurance) Helps cover,

    • Services from doctors and other health care providers.

    • Outpatient care.

    • Home health care.

    • Durable medical equipment (like wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds).

    • Preventive services (like screenings, shots or vaccines,“Wellness” visits).

  • PART D:  (Drug Coverage)   â€‹Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines).

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE
a/k/a PART C

Medicare Adantage is a Medicare-approved plan secured from a private company (like United Healthcare) that offers an alternative to the Federal Medicare (Parts A, B and D).

With Advantage Plans, some Pros can include:

  • Lower premiums or no premium at all,

  • More comprehensive coverage for things like dental, vision, drugs...

  • Max annual out-of-pocket costs.

Some Cons can include:

  • Higher overall out-of-pocket costs due to deductibles, coinsurance, & copayments;

  • Network restrictions,

  • Annual contract without being guaranteed renewable,

  • Prior authorizations / referrals required.

MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT

Also called, "Medigap," because it is designed to "fill in the gaps" on costs such as deductibles and copayments that Medicare doesn't cover.  This is extra insurance you buy from a private company (like United American) to help provide more comprehensive coverage for out-of-pockets costs under original Medicare.

Policies are standardized, and in most states named by letters (like Plan G or Plan K).  The benefits in each lettered plan are the same, no matter which private insurance company sells it.

Navigating the Process

Navigating the Medicare process can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to do it alone. Our agency is here to simplify your journey, whether you're looking to add an Advantage program, a Supplement, or are just starting out.

Things to remember if you are just starting out include:

  1. Once eligible for Medicare, go to www.SSA.gov and register.  Write down and save your Medicare ID.

  2. Create an account with www.Medicare.gov and print your temporary Medicare card pending one coming in the mail to you.  You'll need your ID for this.

  3. Talk with a specialist such as us to add either your Advantage or Supplement insurance.

  4. Watch your timing for this process as there is a time when after you 65th birthday you must be enrolled or you may incur penalties for late enrollment that could last throughout your entire eligibility period.

The C3 Agency is here to guide you through the options you have to help you find the best coverage for your needs.
